CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Atsuko "Akko" Kagari
Age: 16

Personality:
One of Akko's most defining traits is her relentless determination. She is committed to becoming a great witch just like her idol, Shiny Chariot, even though she has no magical background and in fact has specifically struggled to manifest magical abilities all her life. Repeatedly, she demonstrates the desire to learn magic despite these struggles and repeatedly, she pushes herself to the limit and then past it in order to accomplish this goal. As early as the first episode of the Anime, she's doing things like hauling a wounded stranger up a hill in a forbidden forest because she's not ready to give up on her dream.
Unfortunately, this determination can be blurred into stubbornness very easily. Once Akko has made up her mind about something, it can be extremely difficult to change her stance. Sometimes, she refuses to even entertain other view points or admit that she is at fault in a situation - much to the dismay of her teachers and friends on many occasions. If her own reasoning is solid to her, she struggles to change it based on other peoples' inputs, needing to learn firsthand instead in order to change her course. Sometimes she perceives changing course as equivalent to giving up, and that is something she is absolutely LOATHE to do.
Of course, if made very clearly aware that what she is doing is harmful to someone directly, she will stop - she's not cruel or stupid, she's just driven by her heart rather than her head. Her compassion for others runs deep, extending to friends and strangers in equal measure. She genuinely and unconditionally wants to bring joy to people and make their lives better. See, Akko can't sit by and watch others struggle or suffer and will sacrifice a great deal to make sure others are okay - whether it be using the last bit of magic in her wand to free a trapped family of fish, starting a fairy labor union, or tackling a dangerous mission to retrieve the source of her school's magic from a greedy dragon. Akko is willing to risk her own reputation and well being to do what she believes is right.
Her love for the people and world around her does lean towards being naïve. Her innocence and inexperience can lead her to trust when she shouldn't and often puts her at odds with realists and cynics who see the world for what it is. She's optimistic and bubbly, full of energy and always in motion, but these traits also blind her to the danger she puts herself in a lot of the time. She's learned a lot since coming to Luna Nova, but she still believes in the best in everyone and everything, even having been burned by her blind trust in professor Croix to a degree.
Her boundless enthusiasm hasn't dimmed despite what she's faced in her time at Luna Nova. Even confronted with the realities of studying magic and the truths about her idol, she never loses enthusiasm for magic. It does extend outside of the study of magic, as well: her enthusiasm for life pushes her headlong into new adventures and challenges of all stripes. What's truly beautiful is that she wants to share this enthusiasm with others and is often inspirational to those around her through contagious cheer and energetic drive.
That being said, this enthusiasm turns very easily into reckless impulsivity. I said earlier she is driven by and thinks with her heart more than her head and that is very true. If she feels strongly about something - and she can feel strongly about *anything* - she is quick to simply act on it. The idea of consequences, repercussions, and the actual impact of her actions never enters her mind. She often tunnel visions on an effect she thinks her actions will have and even if made aware that there are other options, her certainty in her own calculations drives her to do it anyway.
Physically and socially, Akko is a clumsy person because of her energy and lack of restraint. In magic, she makes mistakes and is sloppy. In social situations, she often says the wrong thing or forgets to take into account her friends and their feelings. Her first thought is often the thought that gets said aloud - for better or worse. She is able to change this when made aware of it, insofar as she will commit to memory a single action she shouldn't take or thing she shouldn't say, but rarely does she internalize the reason past "Somebody explained to me this is not a good thing." or "This once hurt my friends, and I don't want to do that again."
And it really does circle around to her friends a LOT. Akko is a person who makes connections very easily - highly social and extroverted. Once she considers someone a friend - and that doesn't take much - she is fiercely loyal to them and will put their needs above her own without question. Again, assuming she is able to identify their needs in the moment. Her friends are her family and even her rivals like Diana Cavendish, no matter how frustrated she makes her sometimes, are people she admires and respects, and who push her to improve herself.
For the majority of the show, Akko wants to be exactly like her idol, Shiny Chariot. It's only after she forgives Ursula/Chariot that she recognizes that she can only be herself, and can only bring joy in her own unique way. She gains a sense of personal identity in that moment, realizing that she can't and doesn't particularly want to be an exact copy of Chariot anymore. She wants to be Akko. And she wants Akko to be a beacon of light and hope for everyone through magic in all it's forms.
